U.S. Style Cabinet, Where You Go When You Want it Done Right
Angeles City Office and Library Cabinets
Office cabinets are generally a few inches shorter, usually a 30″ floor to countertop height. A 25.43″ tall cabinet on a four inch leg and a one inch countertop is about right.
The pictures to the right and below are in our office at our shop. Slab doors, slab drawer fronts, and plain end panels. The drawers are the metal drawer side system, with two metal drawer sides, an MDF or marine plywood drawer back and 3/4″ thick drawer bottom. There is one shelf in the base cabinets below the drawer and two shelves in the upper cabinets.
Drawer stacks can be three or four, even two drawers if you want to put file folders in the drawers. Our cabinetmakers can help you determine how many drawers will fit if needed.
The countertop is a solid surface material like is found in many fast food restaurants because of the durability and sanitary surface. The material comes in 30″ x 118″ sheets, one half inch thick. The extra few inches along the front of the sheet is trimmed off and added to the bottom to make the edge look thicker and so you have room for seam blocks if you need to make a top wider than 30″ or longer than 118″. You wind up with a 1″ thick front edge with some strips of 1/2″ plywood underneath.
What is wonderful about solid surface is that it is warmer to the touch, doesn’t have all the fissures and cracks and chips like granite so you can write on the top easier.
Remember our philosophy on cabinets, the cabinet boxes should be made to last for decades but doors, drawer fronts, and end panels are expected to get beat up, worn, and eventually be replaced. Building modular cabinets makes replacing the exterior parts easy and economical. MDF doors are a perfect match for European style cabinets for this very reason, sturdy enough to last, inexpensive enough to replace when the cabinets need a new look.
The doors on this set is slab doors but you can use a five part door or a raised panel door. Or you can go with a laminate covered slab doors, drawer fronts, end panels, and trim.
The upper cabinets are hung on metal brackets or a long metal rail. There are two suspension brackets in the upper back of each cabinet that hook onto the brackets or rail. The suspension brackets have adjustment screws that raise the cabinet up and down or in and out to level the cabinets.
Walls need to be fairly close to straight and level in order to hang cabinets. Trim can be used to hide any resulting gaps caused by crooked or out of level walls.
The base cabinets are less sensitive to crooked walls since the countertop can be fit to the crooked walls. The cabinets can be fastened together and pushed up and secured to the flat areas. The adjustable cabinet feet will handle the floors just fine.
Marine plywood is a luxury for office cabinets but not really needed, MDF will work fine in such a dry location. MDF is plenty strong enough for office cabinets. A paint finish is best as it can be repainted in the future versus laminate that usually gets scratched or the edges peeled off with the abuse that office furniture sometimes suffers.
